What Are The 3 Doshas Really About?

vata kapha pitta circle of life ayurveda doshas 355x356The 3 Doshas (Sanskrit दोषः, doṣa), according to Ayurveda, is one of three substances that are present in a person's body. In literature since the twentieth century, this idea is called the three-dosha theory (Sanskrit त्रिदोषोपदेशः, tridoṣa-upadeśaḥ). What Are The 3 Doshas Really About?According to Ayurvedic tradition, our bodies heal from within and work with nature to maintain balance of these Doshas.

In Ayurvedic philosophy, the Tridosha (five elements) combine in pairs to form three dynamic forces or interactions called doshas. Dosha means "that which changes." It is a word derived from the root dus, which is equivalent to the English prefix 'dys', such as in dysfunction, dystrophy, etc. In this sense, dosha can be regarded as a fault, mistake, error, or a transgression against the cosmic rhythm. The doshas are constantly moving in dynamic balance, one with the others. Doshas are required for the life to happen. In Ayurveda, dosha is also known as the governing principles as every living thing in nature is characterized by the dosha.

Vata is the air principle necessary to mobilize the function of the nervous system.

Pitta is the fire principle which uses bile to direct digestion and hence metabolism into the venous system.

Kapha is the water principle which relates to mucous, lubrication and the carrier of nutrients into the arterial system.

The balance of these doshas is a dynamic process that involves your mind, body and the environment. In addition, Ayurvedic doctors describe how the quantity and quality of these three substances fluctuates in the body, according to the seasons, time of day, diet and several other factors. Recognizing that human beings are part of nature, Ayurveda describes these three fundamental energies that govern our inner and outer environments: movement, transformation, and structure.

Everyone inherits a unique mix of the three doshas. But one is usually stronger than the others. Each one controls a different body function. It’s believed that your chances of getting sick -- and the health issues you develop -- are linked to the balance of your doshas.
